Amazon Keyword Segmentation: Brand, Competitor and Complementary Terms

Summary
Framework for reviewing branded and non-branded Amazon advertising separately when that improves measurement and control. Bids and budgets are based on the seller account, product economics, and approved objectives rather than universal percentages.
Branded search terms can represent different shopper intent. Separating them can make reporting clearer, but there is no universal bid modifier, ACoS target, impression-share threshold, conversion rate, or budget split. Use the seller's current search-term and placement evidence.
Defense
Defense can include the seller's brand name, product names, and documented variants or misspellings. Review whether paid coverage serves an agreed purpose and report branded performance separately from non-branded discovery. Do not assume that a specific impression-share number requires a bid increase.
Competitor terms
Competitor targeting must follow current Amazon advertising and trademark rules and the client's written scope. Keep the terms isolated so cost and attributed results are visible. A competitor term with poor account-specific evidence should not be defended with a generic category benchmark.
Complementary intent
Complementary-product queries may be tested when the relationship is accurate and policy-compliant. Treat them as a bounded hypothesis, not an assumed source of incremental demand or organic growth.
Review workflow
- Classify search terms using only the seller's authorized report.
- Record campaign, match type, source period, product economics, and current result.
- Write the proposed bid, budget, negative-keyword, or structure change and its reason.
- Obtain client approval before applying the change.
- Measure an agreed period and report observations without guaranteeing causation or repeatability.
